The pursuit of wisdom has been a defining force in my life for as long as I can remember. T.S. Eliot’s words hit close to home: “Where is the Life we have lost in living? Where is the wisdom we have lost in knowledge?” They speak to something I have always felt: that beneath the noise of daily existence lies a deeper current, one that my art alone can help me navigate.
Though I am a devout Anglican, I have long been captivated by the spiritual traditions of the world. Not out of doubt, but out of hunger. I believe that wisdom does not belong to any single tradition, and that every religion, every sacred practice, carries light worth seeking. Viktor Frankl wrote that “life is never made unbearable by circumstances, but only by lack of meaning and purpose”. And it is precisely this purpose that I have found in my art. Through painting, I can hold the conversations I have always dreamed of having with the sages, teachers, and quiet mystics of every tradition.
My work searches for the common ground that runs beneath all faith – the love, the longing, the joy and the luminous thread that connects us all to the Divine. I begin each painting with a thin, translucent layer of acrylic, building slowly into rich, textured oil. This process is deliberate and deeply personal: the fluid underpainting speaks to the places where religions breathe together in their shared reverence, mercy and mystery. The bold areas speak to our differences – not as wounds or judgement, but as evidence of the magnificent diversity of the human search for the sacred.
Each painting holds three figures, and this number is never incidental. Three has long carried the weight of completeness across the traditions I draw from – the Trinity in my own Anglican faith, the triratna of Buddhism, the triple aspect of the Hindu Trimurti, the body-mind-spirit of countless mystical schools. My figures are not meant to represent three specific traditions in competition, but three voices in one conversation.
My deepest ambition is not simply to make beautiful objects, but to become a human being worthy of having been created. Not someone who merely consumed the earth’s resources, but one who added something of meaning to the conversation of existence. These paintings are my offering to that conversation.
