The excessive pressure to conform to narrow beauty standards affects the female psyche more profoundly than we often acknowledge. From childhood, many women are conditioned to conceal their bodies and internalise shame. We were taught that sexual desirability exists only within the confines of youth and an idealised figure. This conditioning breeds relentless self-criticism: too fat, too thin, breasts too small or too large, wrong proportions everywhere. The result is a fracturing of self that persists even in our most intimate moments, where instead of presence and pleasure, there is self-consciousness and withdrawal. A state that conservative cultures have long deemed virtuous in women.
This suppression extends beyond the personal into the societal, constraining feminine energy and presence in the world. In energetic systems of belief, the sacral chakra, located at the sexual centre also governs creativity, abundance, and joy. To repress sexual energy, then, is to diminish one’s capacity for fulfilment across all dimensions of life.
My paintings explore the female body in ecstasy: unguarded, uninhibited, claiming her desires without apology. I deliberately work within the constraint of a 60x60cm canvas—a formal boundary that mirrors society’s restrictive frameworks. However within this limitation, female sexual and creative energy refuses containment, spilling beyond prescribed borders, insisting on its own expression and truth.
